Love them or not, pets are very much integral to our lives. We are generally a nation of animal lovers!
The PDSA estimates that 53% of households in the UK own a pet. 😺🐶
Having grown up with animals my entire life; rescued three puppies from Bulgaria and a cat in Bahrain, when it comes to animals my decision making becomes, shall we say, “emotion” led. 😉
There is an article from www.gov.uk published in May 2023 talking about the Renters (Reform) Bill:
“The Renters (Reform) Bill will ensure landlords do not unreasonably withhold consent when a tenant requests to have a pet in their home, with the tenant able to challenge unfair decisions.”
So, will many still say “no pets“?
While the obvious concerns are negative:
- Damage to the property
- Animals smell
- Too many pets
- Potential noise to neighbours
- Allergies
There are also some positives:
- Advertising to a wider audience – pet and non pet owners potentially reducing void periods.
- By allowing pets this may encourage good tenants to stay longer, reducing costs in vetting new tenants and tenant change updating.
- Being able to charge a higher rent for a pet friendly property.
- Pets provide companionship for those living on their own.
Do you allow pets in your rental properties?
